The Classroom Academy offers a unique solution to the challenge of financial sustainability facing residencies across the nation. As an innovative residency pilot for teacher preparation, the Classroom Academy offers the first fiscally sustainable model in New York State by leveraging an existing state aid model and now, as a NYS Registered Apprenticeship, applying for NYS Department of Labor grant funds through the Apprenticeship Expansion grant to help offset tuition costs for residents.
This initiative allows New York’s thirty-seven Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES)~similar to Education Service Agencies throughout the country~ to partner with 697 of the 721 districts across the state to provide shared, relevant, and cost-effective programming. The BOCES state-aid reimbursement model embeds the residency work in the existing state level education aid formula, providing districts with a reliable revenue stream and return-on-investment: a culture of improved professional practice that strengthens student learning, along with a systematic approach to recruiting and retaining educators of demonstrated quality. |
BOCES aid rate is based on a financial need formula and ranges from 36-90% across the state. |
