As a second year resident the start of the school year has been outstanding. No longer am I just learning the ropes but can devote more time to establishing relationships with students.” -2nd year resident
Classroom Academy Registers as NYS Apprenticeship
In a groundbreaking approach, Classroom Academy program (with partners New York State United Teachers Education Learning Trust, WSWHE BOCES, local districts and union affiliates, SUNY Plattsburgh @ Queensbury, SUNY Empire, and Sage Colleges) has registered the first NYS Apprenticeship program for teacher preparation through the NYS Department of Labor, under the new NYS title of Teacher. This unique program is the first in the nation that culminates in state teacher licensure and provides graduate candidates with the exciting opportunity to apply their academic coursework in a paid two-year residency placement- combining the on-the-job experience under the guidance of an expert lead teacher with the related instruction of a NYS registered teacher preparation program. Classroom Academy, under this new designation, has applied for Apprenticeship Expansion Grant funding which, if awarded, will support tuition related costs for participants. This grant funding would be in addition to the living stipend of $22,000 per year.
“This innovative program is one more way to increase the pool of teachers to meet the teacher shortage New York is facing.” said NYSUT Executive Vice president Jolene DiBrango
Classroom Academy was launched in 2016, through an NEA GPS grant, with the WSWHE BOCES, Southern Adirondack BOCES Employees Association, SUNY Plattsburgh @ Queensbury, Cambridge CSD, Cambridge Faculty Association, Hudson Falls CSD, and Hudson Falls Teachers Association. Since then its partnerships have grown to include Schenectady City School District, Schenectady Faculty Association, Stillwater CSD, Stillwater Teachers Association, Beekmantown CSD, Beekmantown Teachers Association, SUNY Empire and Sage Colleges. Under the creation of a BOCES Contract for Shared Services (CoSER), partnering districts are able to provide a $22,000 per year living stipend to the resident as well as stipend the work of the expert lead teacher and building leader. This sustainable approach has been transformational allowing school districts to strengthen recruitment, retention, and positive impact on student learning with residency candidates and residency hires.
Want to join this incredible opportunity and enter a new, rewarding, impactful profession with extensive on-the-job experience? Apply to one of the graduate partners (SUNY Plattsburgh @ Queensbury, SUNY Empire, or Sage Colleges) today.

Our [SUNY Plattsburgh @ Queensbury] partnership with the Classroom Academy provides a great combination of pedagogy theory, content knowledge, educational practices and application under the guidance of a mentor teacher. Application is done in real time and the residents are given time to develop as a teacher.” -Dr. Jean Ann Hunt, SUNY P faculty
